Environment

We are aware of the impact we make on the environment and we work to reduce that impact in various ways. We are developing an environmental policy which will help us understand what those environmental impacts are and what codes of practice we need to comply with to achieve best practice.

We have set out a number of challenging environmental objectives which aim to improve our environmental standards and significantly minimise or reduce any environmental impacts caused by our operations.

For energy, our strategy is to measure, manage and then reduce our energy consumption in all locations. At present (November 2009), we have installed 'smart meters' in most of our UK stores and other locations in order to collect and manage our energy consumption data remotely. To reduce our energy consumption we remotely control lighting, heating and ventilation equipment, as well as providing local managers with monthly energy performance reports and assistance to further reduce energy consumption at a local level.

For waste management we have mixed recycling bins which capture packaging waste. Our stores have a ‘backhauling’ alternative which removes packaging waste back to our Distribution Centre where it is recycled. Backhauling diverts waste from landfill sites and reduces the number of vehicles needed to collect waste, as well as reducing the amount that we send to landfill.
